How to Select & Wear a Hat

Tips for looking great in your new hat!
The shape of your face & your hairstyle will determine the style and size of the brim that will suit you the best. Choosing the right style can help balance the proportions of your face shape.
There are many aspects to selecting the perfect hat, so read on:
Special points that apply to almost all face shapes
1-The brim should be no wider than your shoulders.
2-The crown should equal the width of your temples.
3-If you have a long nose, choose a brim that extends beyond the tip of your nose.
4-Wide brims will help to de-emphasize ears that stick out.
5-Most hats should be worn forward on the top of the head, with the crown covering part of the forehead, to just above your eyebrows.
6-A hat should not sit too high or too low on your head & should feel comfortable on the crown of your head. Allow a little space around the crown, as some hat materials will shrink over time. *Sizing can be modified by your hat specialist for smaller heads.
Face shapes
As a general rule, the following tips apply when selecting a hat:
ROUND: Look for a hat with a high crown and a medium to wide brim. Typically slightly angular hats are more flattering then curvy styles.
OVAL: You are lucky - Virtually any style of hat will suit your face shape, because it is well proportioned.
LONG: A hat with a wide brim will balance out the length of your face and give it extra width. Avoid one with a high crown. Wear the hat just above your eyebrows.
HEART: Hats with a medium crown and medium-sized brim will work best. Avoid anything which has a high crown.
SQUARE: If your face is angular and you have a strong square jaw line, you should look for a hat which will help soften your features, such as a floppy style. Look for a hat with a high crown. Like a round face, your face typically looks wider than it does long. Height at the crown can add length to your face.
Body shapes
Ladies who have a petite frame can wear smaller hats that don't have large, floppy brims. Berets & newsboy caps are examples. But for plus size women, these types of hats aren't recommended. Instead, if you have a larger frame, you want to have the big & floppy hat! Plus-size women can definitely get away with this type of big & beautiful hat, as it matches their frames perfectly. Note that in most cases, the fedora or ball cap isn't going to look right or fashionable on plus-size women.
A few more hat selection tips:
1-Decide on a color. A neutral hue is a good place to start and easy to embellish . Check your closet to see which colors you wear most of the time before selecting a color. Your hat doesn't have to match the entire outfit. Note: If the outfit is a print, try to co-ordinate the hat to be in the predominant color of the outfit, and ensure that all your jewelry accessories are in that color, too.
2-Try to find something like a color in a necklace to coordinate with a decoration on the hat. Look for a detail on a hat that appeals to you. Add pins, flowers, garden critters or feathers for fun.
3-If you're purchasing the hat for a special occasion, either wear or bring along the outfit to your consultation you're trying to coordinate with the hat, or a similar style & color to get the full effect.
4-A hat is like a dress. You have to try on a lot before you find the right silhouette that works for you. Don't be afraid to explore. A well chosen hat can add a very unique element to your look.
5-Most important thing is to give your hat a little tilt (usually the direction your bangs flow) for “Hatitude”!
